Vitamin compensation?
FARMERS representatives have played down hopes that producers could receive compensation after vitamin companies received record fines for price-fixing.
The European Commission put fines equivalent to £532m on Hoffman-La Roche of Switzerland, BASF of Germany and several other companies for a 10-year conspiracy to control the vitamins market on Wednesday (Nov 21).
National Farmers Union deputy director general, Ian Gardiner, cautioned producers against getting their hopes up.
But a similar probe into vitamin companies by US anti-trust authorities led to fines of $750m was followed by a civil suit settled at $900m. *
