Weather holds back start of wheat

WEATHER has stopped an earlier start into wheat for Tim Harvey, at Chapel Brampton near Northampton. He finally made a start on Consort and Riband on Tuesday (14 August).

A five-minute storm producing two inches of hail on the ground has caused some damage to crops. “It hurt the Claire, knocking the ears. But I dont think it will affect the yield too much.” However he is worried that the Hagbergs have suffered in the last week.

With 32ha (80 acres) of second wheat combined so far, yields have been below average, as expected. “The hot July seemed to finish the wheat quickly and they did not fill out.” Consort had a specific weight in mid 70s and Riband in low 70s.

Today they should move into first wheat, with specific weight in high 70s. The farm is based on medium loam soil.
