Wheat 70% done – quality OK, yield down

JOHN SMITH, of the Weald Granary in Kent, estimates 70% of the wheat harvest has been combined. Quality is ok but yields are generally low.

With most of the quality milling wheat combined, Hereward and Malacca have performed ok. “It has been common for protein as high as 14% and all the Hagbergs have held high. Protein this year has risen 0.5%.”

They are now seeing more lower class wheat. Claire and Consort have deteriorated from 250-300 Hagberg to 170-200, “they are lower, but all passable.” The proteins are between 11-13%.

He is beginning to see more spring wheat. “Yields have been disappointing, but generally yields are good. Proteins are as high as ever.” Chablis looks good.

Optic spring barley has not been good; “most will be feed barley. At least 50% has been downgraded, with split grains and pre-germination.”
