Wheat quality concerns

RAIN has thwarted progress with the wheat harvest. “There will be concerns over quality if this rain continues,” says Ted Bird of Cannington Grain.

He says that a small amount of Soissons wheat in the area has been combined. Winter barley and oilseed rape harvests are 80-90% finished.

“The winter barley crop has been disappointing. On the heavier land it is about 0.5t/acre below average and on lighter land about 0.3t/acre below average.”

“Although this was expected by the farmers, in some cases they were pleasantly surprised with how well it turned out in the end.”

“If wheat reflects barley it will not be a very big crop.” He says the wheat crops look thin. Early drilled crops are ripe, but later crops still look green.
