Why blame milk producers?
MILK producers are often held responsible for the efficiency of the dairy industry, but more attention needs to be paid to the processors, claims John Duncan, chairman of Scottish Milk.
Speaking at the Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society conference in Crieff, Mr Duncan questioned whether milk processors were working at the efficiency level demanded of the farmer.
He emphasised his point by pointing out that he could not think of any significant investment in new plant or infrastructure in the last 10 years.
Mr Duncan also observed that with the end of the quota system, milk supplies are expected to increase.
He suggested that the producers number one priority in future would be to secure a committed market outlet for their milk.
