FUNDAMENTAL to the Keenan System and new Keenan Klassik II is that the system should increase farm profitability for its users. Using farm-grown feeds and quality food by-products in home-mixed rations not only cuts ration cost but also increases animal performance.
By presenting cows with a nutritionally balanced ration, dry matter intake is optimised and feed efficiency maximised. The current average UK feed conversion efficiency is 1.2kg of milk from 1kg of dry matter. Efficient Keenan customers are achieving conversion efficiencies of 1.4-1.5kg of milk from 1kg of dry matter. An increase of 0.1kg in feed conversion efficiency is worth an extra 400-750 litres/cow/year.
The Keenan Klassik II, allows users to produce consistently what the market wants in terms of milk solids (protein %, casein %, butterfat %) due to its flexibility in handling any ingredient as part of a nutritionally balanced diet. Consistently meeting, on a year-round basis, the required specification milk constituents (and premium price associated with this), is worth as much as 2p/litre on farm.
For example, nutrition alterations can be made to reduce butterfat percentages below butterfat base and free up quota. Ingredient choice for rations can also be used to produce low fat products and spreadable butter, an area of growing demand and interest to processors.
Ration cost savings of £30-40/t are easily achieved using farm-grown and quality bought in feeds.
For beef farmers performance benefits are similar. Flexibility to handle farm-grown and quality feeds, and mix them in a balanced ration greatly reduces ration costs, increases feed efficiency and assures feed traceability and consumer acceptance.
Typically, increases in feed conversion efficiency of 10-15% will be seen, resulting in an increase of 10% in liveweight gain and a reduction in cost per kilogramme gain of 20%. Better carcass quality, higher grades and the ability to produce animals to meet the required market specification (i.e. fat colour, marbling, texture) all increase beef profits.
The new Keenan Klassik II is also now easier to load. With the new variable feed control door arrangement the loading side has been reduced by 150mm (6in) making it easier to load with skid steer or smaller type loaders.
