THE Holstein Friesian Societys Young Members Association won the dairy pentathlon at the European Dairy Farming Event. The winning team comprised James Strachan from Suffolk, Gordon Coldwell from Ayrshire, James Pickford from Stafford-shire and David Hodgson from Cumbria. The prize was a cheque for £300 for the HFS YMA, wristwatches and engraved glass tankards. The British Holstein Societys team was second and the Ayrshire Societys team was third.
The Semex-sponsored contest was open to YFCs and young members of dairy breed societies, and covered five activities: Preparation and presentation of calves; handling and showmanship; stock judging; knowledge of breeding, feeding and management, and the design and construction of a themed stand.

Witheridge YFC was the top scoring club at Devon federations county rally and received the Amory award for most points as well as the Samuels cup for crafts and the Western Independent cup for Its A Knockout. In Cornwall Launceston YFC members put their hands to the plough on behalf of Childrens Hospice South West and raised £700. During their 24hr sponsored ploughing marathon on the Penheale estate in Egloskerry members worked four hour stints and ploughed 50ha (123 acres).
