Get Pelletwise!

Widely-used slug pellet metaldehyde was found in raw water supplies across the country in autumn 2008 above the legal maximum limit for pesticides in drinking water.

Can you do without slug pellets? Have your say on our
forum.

Without a dramatic reduction in its incidence in raw water, regulatory authorities will have to take action, which includes the possibility of a ban – a devastating prospect for the arable industry.

To reduce the risk of metaldehyde getting into water metaldehyde manufacturers have launched the “Get Pelletwise” campaign, supported by Farmers Weekly, Crops and FWi.

Its aims are:

  • To educate farmers, advisers and the trade about the importance of managing slug pellets as pesticides
  • To educate growers about best practice when using slug pellets and raise pelleting standards
  • To reduce levels detected in surface water

Farmers Weekly, Crops and FWi will be running a series of articles and academies highlighting what is at stake and explaining what measures growers should take to reduce the risk of metaldehyde reaching water courses over the coming months.

All the articles will be available through this page, so check back regularly for the latest information and advice.
