Barley yield pleases at Beccles

Winter barley has yielded well at Gerald Godfrey’s Great Common Farm, Beccles, Suffolk, particularly on the heavy ground.

“I haven’t got an accurate yield yet but the 24ha (60 acres) of Saffron went well, with a nice bold sample. It’s not shrivelled at all.

“I think on the basis of that, the wheat will be alright, although I think the rape is likely to be a bit disappointing.”

Mr Godfrey expected to be into his oilseed rape next week. “One or two of the earlier boys have started, and winter barley is well underway in the area.

“Where the wheat has dried off that won’t be too far away either,” he added.
