Fed up near Abbotts Langley

Heavy rain overnight means Charles Martin won’t be combining at Mill House Farm, Abbotts Langley, Hertfordshire, today (23 August).

“We’re getting a bit fed up with it now. We’ve had some drier evenings so have got on a bit. But the wheat is suffering now – it’s starting to look a bit grey.”

Before the rain, yields were disappointing, he said. But Einstein wheat cut over the weekend was slightly better.

Ovation oilseed rape yielded about average, but Nitouche peas were very poor.

“They definitely suffered from the lack of rain – they just died, which is why we got to cut them early.”

Harvest was about 75% complete, with half the wheat still to cut, he added.
