Struggling near Kendal

Farmers in the North West are struggling to get grass silage and wholecrop cereals off, but better weather had enabled some to get on today (26 August).

John Geldard at Plumgarths, Kendal, Cumbria, said some farmers in the hills had only secured their first cut silage two weeks ago, and those in the lower lands were struggling to get second cuts done.

“People are getting quite desperate with the wholecrop cereals – although an awful lot can get done in just a matter of days.

“Last winter was expensive and people will be quite concerned about buying in straw this winter – the prices are quite horrific.”

However, with better weather forecast, prospects were improving, he added. “A good autumn will make a lot of difference to a lot of people.”
