PHOTOS: Farms hit by severe flooding
Farmers captured the dramatic scenes of flooding during the worst September storm in 30 years this week.
Torrential rain and ferocious winds of up to 70mph wrecked the autumn drilling plans for farmers and prevented many from finishing harvest.
The worst hit was Ravensworth, in North Yorkshire, which had 89mm (3.5 inches) in 24 hours and 131mm since Sunday (23 September) – nearly three times its average monthly rainfall for September of 47mm.
Andrew Crewdson, Sentry farm manager at Blagdon Estate, Seaton Burn, Newcastle upon Tyne, watched in horror as the River Blyth burst its banks and flooded 100ha of his farmland.
Mr Crewdson sent Farmers Weekly eerie pictures of flooded fields of newly sown wheat, with more than 100 straw bales – moved by floodwater from neighbouring fields – bobbing about in the water.
