A disappointing yield for Pearl barley

It yielded 6.18 t/ha (2.5 t/acre), with 18% moisture and specific weight 70 kg/hl on his farm near Bodmin, Cornwall.

He said he‘s not going to grow so much barley next year, putting more acreage into winter wheat, but plans to sow 8 ha (20 acres) of Sequel.

Mr Button‘s next door neighbour has been growing Colossus and he said the difference was immediately noticeable.

“He was getting much bigger yields at over 3 t/acre (8.65 t/ha),” but lower specific weights at 63 kg/hl.

Mr Button is also getting annoyed by the traffic on the roads around the farm.

“So many tourists I can hardly move my tractor.”

Mr Button believes that prospects for the near future are more promising.

“I tried to make a start on the spring barley but it was still too wet”  However “it looks cracking – I don‘t know why but Dandy always grows really well here in Cornwall.”

He also said “the wheat looks promising – I‘ll be disappointed if I don‘t get 4 t/acre (9.88 t/ha).”
