A ‘terrible’ harvest – update

CHRIS Cockayne described this year as ‘terrible‘ from his farm near Cropwell Butler in Nottinghamshire.

He has harvested 20ha (50 acres) of Access between the showers yielding 9.88 t/ha (4 t/acre) at 20% moisture.

“We are just getting delayed and delayed all the time. It is so bad I do not know what to do.”

Mr Cockayne has had no trouble with orange blossom midge because he sprayed for it early.

“Orange blossom midge is not the problem. The problem is physically getting on and doing the job.”

He has another 400 acres of wheat still to do, with most of it feed and a little bit of Einstein. But he thinks the Einstein “is shot because of the weather”.

“We have got all this technology to help us harvest, but if mother nature is against you, you cannot do anything.”
