Barley yields down on thin soil
Chris Vowes near Bristol airport said the thin soil held back his winter barley yields to an average of 5 -6 t/ha, but he was pleased with a good crop of straw.
He was also disappointed with the winter wheat yields of less than 6t/ha, which were a consequence of insufficient rainfall earlier in the season. He hopes to finish cutting wheat by Wednesday (17 August).
Mr Vowes said this had been the worst year financially in 54 years on the farm due to very low crop prices.
He said: “With input costs now so high it does not stack up growing cereals unless the crop could be forward sold for at least £85/t on my land.”
