Cob Clinic will assess maize harvest
Maize growers wanting to get an idea of when their crop will be ready to harvest, can bring cobs along to the Limagrain UK stand at this year’s Dairy Event and Livestock Show.
Visitors should bring six maize cobs, picked that morning, to the free “Cob Clinic”. They will then be given an on-the-spot assessment of harvest date, backed up with a dry matter analysis.
With the earlier date of the show, and also the more challenging weather conditions, we are expecting cob maturities and size to vary more than usual this year, says Limagrain’s Tim Richmond.
“The cob clinic is likely to be a busy one, but we will also be giving advice on what varieties are best suited for different growing sites and what to look out for when growing maize under plastic.”
Visitors to the stand will be able to learn about the new early maturing variety, Abbott – a high dry matter and starch variety with a predicted maturity class of eight, and Atrium, a high energy yielding variety, ideal as a fuel source for biogas plants. Both varieties will be making their debut in the 2010 NIAB list.
Information will also be available on new varieties: Garland, Acumen and Vivacity, which are still undergoing NIAB trialling.
