Cornish farmer starts crimping wheat harvest
Mr Strout is growing Claire, Deben and the new variety Robigus.
“Although it’s a bit early to tell, I’m not that impressed with Robigus – next year I’ll probably just grow Claire and Deben again.”
According to the yield monitor on the combine he was getting 11.12 t/ha (4.5t/acre) yield with 30% moisture content.
“So far the harvest has been a bit stop and start.”
Mr Strout said this is mainly due to the quickly changing weather.
“My barley harvest is fairly reasonable,” Mr Strout said.
He finished harvesting his 12ha (30 acre) Siberia barley at just over 7.4 t/ha (3 t/acre) with 14.5% moisture.
“Normally we can’t get the yields up and so it’s not in my plan at the moment to grow any barley again next year.”
Mr Strout also says his oilseed rape crop is looking promising.
“We had no problems with establishment – the canopy is very thick.
“It looks excellent.”
Mr Strout intends to start harvesting his oilseed rape crop within the next week.
