Cost effective P, Mg and S fertiliser

As the sole processor of the UK’s beet sugar crop, we work in partnership with over 2,500 growers and our customers to deliver a world-class product that is made to the highest standards every day. We are the leading producer of sugar for the British and Irish food and beverage markets, processing around eight million tonnes of homegrown sugar beet and producing up to 1.4 million tonnes of sugar each year.

Farmers can avoid spiralling fertiliser costs by sourcing agricultural lime rich in phosphate, magnesium and sulphur at a modest price during the 2021/22 sugar beet campaign.

Applying soil conditioner

LimeX, a proven pH balancer and soil conditioner, approved by the Soil Association for organic use, is available through backloading, providing efficient cost-effective haulage from sugar factory to farm.

It leaves the factory with inherent nutritional value equating to at least £16 worth of phosphate, magnesium and sulphur for every tonne of LimeX spread at current fertiliser prices.

“Careful management of your soil pH is the key to ensuring the nutrients within your soil are the most available to the plant,” says Glenn Carlisle, LimeX Business Manager, “And because our product has such fine and consistent particle size it’s very fast-acting and more efficient at raising pH and available calcium levels than ordinary ground limestone.”

“With an additional benefit of 9kg of phosphate, 8kg of magnesium and 6kg of sulphur in every tonne, farmers can cut out a huge proportion of their fertiliser costs whilst keeping on top of their liming.”

James Forrest, who farms 1,600ha (4,000 acres) near Stowmarket in Suffolk, has been using lime for years to improve soil condition. “I use LimeX most years because I believe it is a very good product with the added benefit of additional nutritional value. There is no doubt in my mind it brings benefits to our crop rotation.”

James’ farming business focuses on wheat, barley, bean and grass seed production, as well as sugar beet, winter and spring barley, rape, triticale, maize, parsley, beans and silage – in addition to Red Poll sucklers.

James applies LimeX in conjunction with a range of organic manures like farm yard manure, green waste, bio solids and occasionally poultry manure.

“It fits very well within our manuring management. I moved to an emphasis on organic materials years ago to reduce our reliance on artificial fertilisers. I like the fact that LimeX is a co-product of sugar manufacturing – rather than quarried. The fact we get it delivered as a backload on sugar beet deliveries to the factory makes so much sense in terms of haulage efficiency,” says James.

You don’t have to grow beet to be a LimeX customer – the company supply over 250,000t of product to farmers across the UK and Ireland every year.

“At a time of challenge within the haulage industry we’re encouraging customers to consider backloading LimeX when sugar beet is delivered, to maximise haulier efficiency and achieve a least-cost transport solution,” says Glenn.
