Premium Crops unveils record contract values for spring 2026

Lacklustre spring malting barley returns mean some growers are looking at alternatives this spring, and Premium Crops has highlighted three options offering good potential returns along with a range of other benefits.

James Stroude, one of four agronomists at Premium Crops, says not only do they give farmers greater financial certainty – with profitable premiums across linseed, naked oats and flax seed – they help diversify rotations, improve soil health and sustainably reduce pest and disease pressure too.
Linseed leads the way
Spring linseed is considered a strong entry point for following wheat and, as well as commanding record prices in 2026, it remains in high demand from feed and livestock producers seeking traceable, high alpha linolenic acid ingredients.
Contracts are also available for naked oats, offering growers the potential to earn double the output of a conventional oat crop, with a £40/t premium over feed wheat.
James points out that price performance remains strong for naked oats despite wider cereal market declines, and high-value markets include the gluten-free, wholefood and equine sectors, with huskless grain offering easier processing for end users.
A third option is flax, with new contracts of up to £1,000/t based on strong demand across fibre markets,
Premium Crops is also seeking seed growers for both spring and winter flax seed production, with attractive contract returns contributing positively to farm profitability.
“These crops offer both agronomic benefits and a positive impact on the bottom line,” says James.
Contractor support is also available. “We can connect growers with specialist machinery providers, and it’s also a particularly good opportunity for borage growers already equipped for similar harvest requirements.”
Agronomy support
Especially valuable for first-time growers is the support available during the season.
“Our agronomists share specialist advice and technical expertise to aid confident decision-making and help growers get the most from their break crops,” says James.
This includes regular agronomy bulletins and hands-on support, together with practical, tailored guidance to growers across the UK.
