Twitter round-up: Warm weather kickstarts spring drilling race

The recent spell of warm, dry weather has allowed many growers to get into full the swing of spring drilling alongside applications of manure and compost.

With crops going into good ground conditions, and temperatures across much of the UK climbing, we take a look at the tweets from farmers and growers in full flow on the farm.

Spring drilling is all go

Jim Scarratt, farm manager of 1,090ha in Norfolk, is making the most of the spring sunshine, kickstarting the 2022 sugar beet drilling campaign in ideal conditions.

Annabel Hamilton, who farms on the mixed family farm in the Scottish Borders, is busy planting Conway spring oats, destined for the Quaker oat market and a porridge bowl near you.

Cambridgeshire farmer Toby Simpson is planting a crop of “boats” – a combination of beans and oats. He has a firm focus on all things soil health and is currently a Nuffield scholar, focusing on cover crops and the opportunities they create.

Meanwhile, in the South West, Cornish family-run business Pengelly Farms is planting salad potatoes, overlooking St Michaels mount. 

Boycefield Farm in Herefordshire was busy spreading composted farmyard manure on to its crop of Mascani winter oats, beginning the farm’s journey to a regenerative agricultural system.
