Fine day brings combines out in Sussex
A dry day in East Sussex is allowing James Fuggle to combine winter barley at Chessons Farm, Wadhurst.
“We started Saffron winter barley last week and should finish it this week,” he said. Dodging between the showers he was about halfway through the barley, leaving around 18ha (45 acres) to do.
“It’s yielding very well – we’re 0.5cwt short of 3t/acre (7.4t/ha) at 15.4% moisture.
“We’re getting on well today (21 July) – it’s a nice dry day, but so far harvest has been very snatch-and-grab.”
Mr Fuggle hoped to be into his winter oats next week.
Crop: Winter barley

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
