Finishing wheat harvest in Yorkshire

Richard Wilkinson is on the last stretch of winter wheat harvest at Corpselanding Holme Farm, Hutton Cranswick, Yorkshire, after a very good summer.

The Kielder first wheat was exceptional, reaching 12.4t/ha. “We’ve just moved into it, and it’s looking good so far,” Mr Wilkinson said.

JB Diego as a first wheat was also very pleasing, averaging 10.4t/ha. But grown as a second wheat it wasn’t quite as promising.

“We managed just under 7.4t/ha which was disappointing. Luckily we didn’t have too much second wheat to cut,” he added.

Although he started combining the 25ha of winter wheat two and a half weeks ago, the break in weather had put a halt to progress until recently.

“With no dryer on the farm, we’ve let nature run its course and it’s now coming off around 16% moisture,” he said.

Straw quality was good, with the wheat holding up well. Disease also hadn’t been any problem, with Mr Wilkinson keeping well on top of the spraying programme.

“We’re now busy spreading muck before drilling the Cassia winter barley, which we hope to be in the ground around 22 September,” he said.

“As soon as this is out of the way we’ll be drilling Kielder and Revelation winter wheat with the aim to have everything in the ground by 10 October.”
