Underpinning the theme, a film showing that farmers are everyday heroes, with a place in society that ranks alongside other professionals such as doctors, police, teachers and firemen, received great applause.

Much like those professionals in the emergency services, farmers are on call 24 hours a day, often work in hostile conditions and care for life. They are committed to quality and have a crucial role to play in the community in nurturing and protecting the landscape and wildlife, as well as producers of food.

Reinforcing the No Ordinary People theme, John Torode, co-presenter of MasterChef and RASE president, said: “People now realise the world doesn’t rely solely on bankers and lawyers – it relies on real workers, like people who produce food and people who cook it.”
