Good straw for Scottish grower
Gary Mitchell had finished harvest two weeks ago, and he was mainly pleased with results at West Galdenoch Farm, Stoneykirk.
“It was all good here. We’ve been finished a while but we crimp everything here.”
Winter barley had been very good with 60ha (150acres) averaging 10t/ha when wet and 8.1t/ha (3.25t/acre) once crimped.
Riviera spring barley had been good, averaging 6.25t/ha (2.5t/acre), with some coming in at up to 7.5t/ha (3t/acre). He said quality was average but the straw was good. He planned to grow Riviera and possibly some Westminster next year.
Twenty hectares (50acres) of oilseed rape had been disappointing at 3.25t/ha (1.3t/acre), which he said was probably due to wind damage.
Mr Mitchell said harvest was about 70% done in the area. “We had such a wet time in the spring that the later sown crops are just ready. We’ve had horrible weather for the past few weeks here.”
But he added: “Overall I’m pleased because we got good straw which is important for us.”
