Harvest 09: Wheat pleases near Bury
Clouds are threatening rain in Suffolk today (3 August), but Andrew Maddever is busy combining before the dry spell breaks.

Mr Maddever started cutting winter wheat at Hall Farm, Whetstead, Bury St Edmunds, on Saturday, and was pleased with both yields and quality so far.
The 182ha (450 acres) of Cordiale and Solstice had yielded 8.75t/ha (3.5t/acre) and 9.2t/ha (3.7t/acre), respectively, as a continuous wheat and second wheat.
Coming in at 18% moisture, both varieties were proving of good quality, with protein content at 13.5%.
Mr Maddever had finished the 160ha (400 acres) of Excalibur oilseed rape, and was delighted with yields of 3.8-5t/ha (1.2-2t/acre)
But winter barley, which suffered from drought on sandy land in the spring, was disastrous. “It was so bad I don’t want to mention it!”
He now had 930ha (2300 acres) of wheat to combine, and reckoned harvest was about 10-15% complete in the area.
