Kent harvest grinds to a halt

Eighteen millimeters of rain since Friday (Aug 19) has caused Kent farmer Clive Apps to come to a “grinding halt”.

Wheat yields have been averaging 10 – 11.25t/ha which he said is reasonable, but quality is disappearing fast with the rain. Cordiale cut before the rain had 13.5% protein, 82kg/hl bushel weight and over 300 Hagbergs. Hagbergs of the later crop will definitely drop, he said.

Mr Apps estimated wheat was 60 – 70% complete in the Kent area. He thinks he is ahead of last year, although needs a day and a half of dry weather to finish combining.
