Lincolnshire grower disappointed
Chris Hewis is disappointed at the stop-start nature of harvest at The Grange, Habrough.
“We’ve cut very little wheat in the last two weeks due to intermittent rain.”
He had cut 24ha (60ac) from 60ha (150ac) of winter wheat, which was doing well. Alchemy was yielding just under 10t/ha (4t/ac) and quality was looking very good. Robigus was yielding “exceptionally well” at 10t/ha, but grain was looking slightly smaller than the Alchemy.
“We haven’t had it tested yet but we cut it dry which is good.”
But he was concerned for the remaining Robigus which was beginning to sprout in the ear. He said there was none in standing Einstein which was looking very well as a second wheat.
Mr Hewis also still had 36ha (90ac) of Cocktail spring barley, but said the 18ha (45ac) already done yielded well at 7.5t/ha (3t/ac). Quality also looked good.
“We hope to finish the Cocktail by tomorrow and then hope to finish the wheat. It is just very frustrating with the rain. We were extremely early but now we are about three or four days behind.”
