Lower residue limit spells early end for aldicarb in spuds

A European Commission decision to lower the maximum residue level for aldicarb in potatoes, carrots and parsnips means the active ingredient will not be available for use in these crops next season.

The Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (Residues) decided to reduce the MRL to the “limit of determination”, which means UK authorised uses of aldicarb on potatoes, carrots and parsnips will be revoked, as they generate residues above the new MRLs.

Pesticides Safety Directorate pointed out these uses are revoked a year ahead of the end of the essential use period, although aldicarb (as in Temik) use on onions may continue for the period of essential use, as the MRL set will not be exceeded by current UK authorised uses.

A Bayer CropScience spokesman expressed disappointment at the decision.

“Bayer CropScience has conducted extensive risk assessments which support the view that when used appropriately, this product does not pose unacceptable risks to either consumers or the environment.”
