Mixed harvest in Shropshire
Shropshire farmer Andrew Craig said it has been a very mixed wheat harvest this year having finished combining on Sunday (August 28).
First wheat Robigus yielded 10t/ha but he said the straw had been very green when it was cut last week. Claire came in at just over 9t/ha.
Second wheats were pleasing with Napier and Gladiator averaging 8.6t/ha. He said Gladiator did well despite suffering some lodging.
Yields were inconsistent across fields and were not helped by slug damage in the autumn, which was a problem for many in the area, he said.
Quality has been ok with good bushel weights and the sample was bold and clean. Mr Craig is pleased all straw was sold off the field for a good price, saving fuel costs from chopping.
