New wheat varieties shine in Yorkshire harvest
Wheat yields had been 15% down at Humberside Farmers Ltd, East Yorkshire, with a couple of notable exceptions.
“Oakley has done very well at 11.5t/ha (4.7t/acre) and Duxford (a candidate Group 2 milling wheat) did 10-10.25t/ha (4-4.1t/acre),” said Adrian Hatchett. “Apart from that we’ve been nearer 8.5t/ha (3.4t/acre).
Carat winter barley yielded a pleasing 8.25t/ha (3.3t/acre) while Retriever disappointed at 7.5-8t/ha (3-3.2t/acre).
NK Bravour, Castille, Royal and Excalibur oilseed rape came in above average at 4.5t/ha (1.8t/acre).
That left just 30ha (74 acres) of Gladiator to finish off today, which would put harvest timing on par with a normal year, said Mr Hatchett.
