Nothing doing for a couple of weeks
Robert Craig has finished harvesting his barley in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
It’s been a good harvest for Mr Craig and he’s especially pleased with his Cannock.
It yielded 9.88-10.5 t/ha (4 – 4.25 t/acre) at 20% moisture. “I’m very pleased.” That compares with the farms typical average of 8 t/ha (3.25 t/acre)
He also harvested 8ha (20 acres) of Camion yielding 8.9 t/ha (3.6 t/acre) with specific weight 71.8 kg/hl at 17% moisture.
The 6ha (15 acres) of Haka yielded 8.15 t/ha (3.3 t/acre) and 72 kg/hl.
He said the average on his farm is usually 8.03 t/ha (3.25 t/acre).
Mr Craig is trying to grow high protein varieties for his cows.
“In the past we had to import a lot of the protein but now we’re trying to grow it ourselves.”
An important by-product of the harvest is the straw. However, the straw is a little bit damp because of a short shower which dropped 5mm over night.
There is nothing arable left for Mr Craig to do until his spring barley will be ready, which he thinks will be in about three weeks.
