‘One fifth of eastern wheat is cut’

Phil Darke from Camgrain in East Anglia says his milling wheat proteins are averaging 12.7% and hagberg is 270.

According to Mr Darke, 20% of the wheat, 90% of the Optic spring barley and 75% of the oilseed rape has been harvested, while all winter barley and oats have been finished.

He said Xi19 has been suffering from orange blossom midge damage more noticeably than other varieties.

“Xi19 has had some oddball patches with hagberg being a bit iffy because of the orange blossom midge.”

He said between 15% and 20% of the crop had been affected by midge, but added that it only had a significant effect on quality in severe cases.

East Anglia has been relatively lucky, missing the main brunt of the storms.

An inch of rain has fallen in the past week, but crops are beginning to come into store as the combines start to roll again.
