Pig of a year for Nhants rape

He‘s harvested 141ha (350 acres) of Royal yielding 2.47-2.97 t/ha (20-24 cwt) on the western fields while the fields on the Eastern side of the farm have been coming in with 3.71 t/ha (30 cwt).

This is due to a storm “just clipping the western half of the farm”.

“Round here we have different microclimates where higher exposed areas are fine but down in the valleys gets the brunt of the storm,” he said.

Moisture contents started off at around 14% but are now dropping to 8-10% due to recent settled weather.

Mr Dalton said: “It‘s a pig of a year for the oilseed rape – it‘s been difficult.

“The growth of the rape was a bit slow, but we managed to keep the moisture in the ground which means it’s fairly even.”

Mr Dalton said that this year has been slightly better than his five year average.

But said: “There‘s still a long way to go yet.”

He still has to finish the other half of the rape crop with wheat and beans still to do.
