Pleased with wheat at Windwhistle Farm

Alan Cook has cut 40ha of winter wheat at Windwhistle Farm, Romsey, Hampshire, and is really quite pleased with the results.
The Grafton yielded 9.3t/ha, testing at 16% moisture – a marked improvement on last year’s efforts.
“Last year was horrible,” he said. “Although the crops have suffered some weather damage this year due to the heat, the wheat actually looks like proper wheat.”
Mr Cook had also combined 60ha of oilseed rape. “Although it’s slightly down on last year, it’s not too bad at all,” he said. “Yield is good to average and we expect the quality to be very good.”
In addition, he had cut 20ha of winter barley for another farmer in the area, which yielded an excellent 9.3t/ha.
With 1200ha of crops still in the ground, including linseed, oilseed rape, oats and wheat, there was a busy path ahead, he added.
“There’s still a long way to go. We’ve got about a week before it becomes hectic.”
