Pleasing Lincolnshire oilseed rape
Lincolnshire farmer Chris Hewis was very pleased with 20ha of oilseed rape. Six hectares of Excalibur yielded 3.75t/ha and 14ha of Royal yielded 4.4t/ha. The yields were slightly down on last year, but the crop all came in at 7% moisture.
“Yields may be down but I’m quite pleased with them because of the year, and the price is better, with £30/t more.”
Forty hectares of Pearl winter barley yielded 7.5t/ha, which was 5% more than last year. The crop had all been grown for a malting contract and met quality specification with nitrogen levels of 1.65 – 1.7%.
“I’m very pleased it has all gone off the farm already for malting and I received a £12/t premium.”
He expected Einstein winter wheat to be ready any day now, although he had been held back from cutting by rain last night.
