WATERLOGGED SOILS mean extra care is needed when choosing herbicides this autumn, to protect the future of higher dose residual herbicide products.
Voluntary Initiative guidelines stress the need to avoid contamination of groundwater by surface run-off from saturated soils, says Du Pont herbicide project manager Mike Ashworth. “With the spotlight very much on ipu and chlorotoluron, responsible use of these products is essential.”
Late drilling and poor weather has exacerbated blackgrass pressure, with protracted germination and variable growth stages across individual fields making product choice more of a challenge than usual. Post-em products based on lower-dose sulfonylurea herbicides make sense, he advises.
