Scottish harvest behind last year
Scottish farmer Doug Fowlie from Peterhead said all winter barley and oilseed rape has been cut, with wheat and spring barley due in a week.
He said winter barley yielded well at 9.4t/ha, with reasonable moisture of 14-19%. One hundred and thirty two hectares of oilseed rape yields were very mixed, he said. Herald, Winner and Royal averaged 3.75t/ha with the lowest yields where the crop was affected by weeds.
He said harvest is slightly behind last year as there is normally no gap between winter and spring crops, but he has to wait seven to 10 days this year. He said crops did not grow very well in the spring conditions, but there is no real reason for this gap.
