Shrops first wheats do well

Paul Bird on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border has finished wheat harvest and is reasonably pleased with results.  Of 180ha of Einstein, Solstice and Robigus, Einstein performed the best, he said.

Continuous wheats cut at 8t/ha, not performing as well as the first wheats at 8.75t/ha on variable soil. He said these results were “reasonably good” for us.

Mr Bird suggests yields are slightly down on last year but said it is hard to tell as the crop has been dry this year compared to the very wet crop last year. Quality looks promising, he said.

Harvest has finished 10 days earlier than last year – Aug 18, compared to August 28 last year, he said. “It’s been a trouble free harvest.”
