Giles Porter from Penncroft Farms in Surrey said his crop is all “generally pretty good and looking promising”. He grows oilseed rape, wheat, winter beans and winter peas in Farnham.

He said the sun was shining now but the rain in May meant crop prospects were potentially better than last year. But the recent very hot spell meant crops on lighter soil had started to go off, and the oilseed rape suddenly stopped flowering.

After Monday’s rain he was now waiting for the sun to dry out his crops.

“We’ve had enough rain now, so we just need a bit of warmer weather to get combining.”

No farms have started cutting in his area, but Mr Porter expected to begin cutting within the next two weeks.
