Ten days stop-start in Shropshire
Andrew Craig was about to start combining again this afternoon, having been going stop-start for 10 days. “We’re going steady again now. With 52ha (130ac) of wheat left we might get finished after the weekend.”
Second wheats Robigus, Gladiator and Ambrosia were averaging 8.75t/ha (3.5t/ac), but first wheats were “all over the place”. Ambrosia was coming in at 10.5t/ha (4.2t/ac), Claire at just under 10t/ha (9.4t/ac), Robigus at 9.75t/ha (3.9t/ac) and Alchemy at 10.7t/ha (4.28t/ac).
“We have broken no records but it has gone reasonably.”
Quality was good with all feed wheats. No bushel weights had been taken but he said the sample was very nice looking. He hoped to get in the remaining wheat soon because the straw was looking very ripe.
“We’ve heard reports from around here and in Staffordshire of wheat starting to sprout. Hopefully we’ll be ok if we can get it done in a couple of days.”
Mr Craig had Robigus, Alchemy and a little Claire to drill early and planned to stick to Napier, Gladiator and Ambrosia as second wheats.
He cut 17ha (42ac) of winter beans in the middle of last week, despite moisture levels of 20%. “We were concerned as they were beginning to shatter from the dry weather, plus we wanted to get the crop out of the way. It was not disappointing but it broke no records.” The Wizard beans came in at 4t/ha (1.6t/ac).
He said harvest had been a good average this year. “Three weeks ago we were flying along, but it is a more normal harvest now. We’ve done well and are probably up a little on the past few years.”
