Two days combining left in Kent
Two days combining will see John Beslee finish harvest at Hook Green Farm, Southfleet, Kent.
“Our spring barley is ready but we want to cut it below 16% moisture,” he said. The 43ha (106 acres) of Tipple cut so far had yielded at least 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), which Mr Beslee was pleased with.
“We were very lucky – we had rain at all the right time for the spring barley this year.” He now had 18ha (44 acres) to finish off.
The Solstice winter wheat was finished about 10 days ago (17 August), and averaged better than usual at 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre). Cut at a maximum of 18% moisture, it tested at about 12.5% protein.
Mr Beslee’s Castille and Excalibur oilseed rape both yielded 2.7t/ha (1.1t/acre) – about the same as usual.
