Wheat harvest in East Anglia is well underway.

Jeffrey Claydon has been pushing on through his 160ha(400 acres) of winter wheat.

He has finished 24ha (60 acres) of Ambrosia, which yielded about 9 t/ha (3.6t/acre), performing better as a second wheat than a first.

A similar area of Deben and Gladiator are also in the barn, yielding about 8 t/ha (3.2 t/acre),

And 17ha (42.5 acres) of Zebedee gave just under 8.5 t/ha (3.4 t/acre), which was a little disappointing for a first wheat, he said.

Mr Claydon had cut 30ha (75 acres) of Glasgow and was just beginning Robigus winter wheat today. Robigus was coming in on a pleasing 10 t/ha.

All the wheat has been cut below 15% moisture.

Es Astrid and Kalif oilseed rape cut by the end of July yielded about 4t/ha (1.6 t/acre) over 120ha (300 acres). Moistures were within 7.5-9%.

Mr Glaydon said locally yields were 1.25 t/ha (0.5t/acre) lower in the locality and thought that soil damage from last year’s harvest played a key role.

“We’re down to the last 300 acres now. So far we’ve been fortunate to miss the rain. If it stays warm and dry they’ll be no trouble.”
