Worst harvest in history

Mr Ramsay has only just finished harvesting the last of his winter barley and is just finishing off the last of the winter sown oilseed rape, which has been laying in the swathe for the best part of a month.

“The local machinery ring has saved me this year, allowing us to have four combines going at once.

“We have not even touched the winter wheat yet.”

The rape produced “reasonable yields”, however he believes around 10% of the crop has suffered from sprouting. He also estimates that 1t/ha has been lost on the ground in his winter barley.

With 120ha of spring barley and 100ha of winter wheat still left to combine, Mr Ramsay hopes to be going as soon as he can and aims to get into the last of the rape today (Aug 26).

“We‘re even stretched to find enough fields to plough,” he added.
