10-year tenancy available on Welsh upland farm

Tenants are being sought for a 612-acre livestock farm in Powys covering mountain and in-bye land.

Nantycoedwr Farm is near Oswestry on the Lake Vyrnwy Estate, which sits on the edges of the Llanwddyn reservoir.

The holding has been farmed continuously by the current tenant’s family since 1939 and is available on an initial term of 10 years.

The farm is suitable for sheep, with 106 acres of gently sloping pasture around the farmhouse, with a mixture of land for fodder growing, grazing land and ffridd – mixed habitat mountain land offering rough grazing. The mountain land extends to 506 acres and is fenced.

Currently, the tenants run a hefted flock of 300 ewes, the majority of which are Welsh Mountain ewes with some Welsh Hill Speckled Face ewes.

Agricultural buildings are a mix of modern and traditional and include covered lambing sheds. There is also a farmhouse.

The farm also falls within the Berwyn Mountains Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), an area which covers over 24,000ha of moorland in north-east Wales.

“Nantycoedwr Farm is a unique prospect,” said Edward Holloway, land agent at Knight Frank.

“The land and surrounding area is important for wildlife, storing carbon in its blanket bog and providing drinking water to Liverpool from the lake.

“The opportunity to take on an initial 10-year term and be involved in an important part of the Welsh landscape makes this an appealing prospect for any tenant.”

The agent said it was the first time a farm on the estate had been publicly marketed to let in at least 20 years.

Dates are to be confirmed but viewings are expected to be in mid-February and the application deadline is expected to be in mid-March.
