Bakewell sale must be extended

A SURGE OF entries to the early annual Bakewell breeding sheep sale, set for Sept 9, has forced auctioneer Bagshaws to extend the event to two days.

According to the company‘s Alistair Sneddon, an entry of 6000 had been billed, but over 9200 shearlings have been entered for the first of the seasonal sales.

“Quite unexpected,” he said. “I rather suspect a larger number of ewe lambs was held over on local farms last autumn and that will have contributed to numbers.”

Despite modern facilities at Bakewell, insufficient penning for the entry will see it split over Sept 9 and 10.

Buyers will be offered both Mules and other breeds on each day, says the company.
