DEFRA money to help new entrants

New entrants are to get expert advice on securing farm tenancies, following confirmation of DEFRA funding for a series of training workshops.

After a successful pilot event last year, the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs secured just under £7000-worth of DEFRA money to help fund three regional tenancy training events in the south-west, London and York later this year.

The events, which focus on practical advice for presenting a good tender, are supported by the Tenant Farmers Association and Savills – both of which sponsor the NFYFC’s Farm Business Development Competition.

“Undoubtedly, one of the biggest hurdles facing new entrants to farming is the tenancy application,” Savills director Clive Beer said. “We are delighted to be involved in this extremely valuable initiative for young farmers and DEFRA’s funding is a much welcomed endorsement of what we are hoping to achieve.”

NFYFC agriculture and rural affairs officer Sarah Palmer added: “NFYFC is delighted to be working with our industry partners to deliver comprehensive training that will not only help those taking part in the competition, but also puts members in a very strong position to secure future farming opportunities.”

Details of dates and venues for the regional events will be confirmed later this year.
