• Ed Miliband, the new Energy and Climate Change secretary, has promised to “respond swiftly” to a report which says Britain should cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by 2050. The current target is 60% of the 1990 level.
The Times is deeply saddened by the new Postman Pat series in which Pat commutes from Greendale village to the centralised sorting office in Pencaster. One Lake District post-office owner who was forced out of business said: “It is a bit of a slap in the face when rural post offices are going through so much turmoil.”
The BBC’s defence? “Postman Pat is not real, so to suggest he’s making a statement about real life doesn’t make sense.”
