Free training and low drift spray nozzles for Midlands farmers

Severn Trent is inviting farmers in priority catchments to boost their knowledge and improve spray efficiencies in a virtual workshop, where they will receive a free set of low drift spray nozzles through the water company’s Swap Your Nozzles scheme.

The training opportunity follows a successful pilot scheme held earlier this year, which saw 88 farmers, responsible for over 33,000ha take part in workshops, that provided information on reducing spray drift and greatly minimising the risk of pesticides reaching watercourses.

“Swap Your Nozzles online sessions will run throughout June and July and will be led by expert independent agronomist and trainer, Chris Tolley,” explains Margaret Baile, Severn Trent senior agricultural adviser.

“Each event will cover topics from legislation, Local Environment Risk Assessments for Pesticides (LERAP) and buffer zones, through to choosing a nozzle and application considerations, and attendees can register for one NRoSO and two BASIS CPD points,” she says.

“Following the training there will be a Q&A session before delegates will be offered a choice of fully funded LERAP 3* or 4* nozzles and caps from a predefined list of options.”

The training is available to all farmers within Severn Trent priority catchments, and farmers are urged to sign up soon, as spaces are limited.

Severn Trent is the UK’s second biggest water company. It serves 4.1m homes and business customers in and around the Midlands. Its region stretches from the Welsh borders to Rutland and from the outskirts of Sheffield south to the Bristol Channel and east to the Humber.

Catchment management is a key part of Severn Trent’s environmental work and involves working with farmers, landowners, businesses and charities to use and influence water in an environmentally friendly way to protect water quality at the source, rather than rely on treatment measures later in the process to becoming drinking water.
