Gordon Brown meets supermarkets for ‘food summit’

The Prime Minister has called supermarkets and NFU president Peter Kendall to a hastily convened “food summit” to discuss the “crisis” of rising food prices.

Gordon Brown is set to meet supermarket representatives, including Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King, and Mr Kendall at 10 Downing Street, today to discuss issues surrounding the increase of food prices across the world.

It is understood Mr Brown is keen to take “urgent co-ordinated action” to tackle rising costs.

He is also expected to discuss European policy encouraging biofuels, which Mr Brown said the UK should be “more selective” in its support of.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said Mr Brown was concerned about the impact rising food prices could have on the global and domestic economy.
