Lock into straights savings

LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS could make big savings by locking into straights prices now while commodity prices languish, says Strutt & Parker‘s dairy consultant Paul Dennison.

“What is bad news for one sector is frequently good for another, and the livestock sector will be breathing a sigh of relief that the high prices they have had to pay over recent months have dropped,” said Mr Dennison.

“Low cereal prices and the currently crashed US soya market give dairy farmers a chance to secure their winter feed requirements at 10-20% less than last year.”

But he urged farmers to act quickly in case soya prices bounced back.

“Anything other than ideal harvesting conditions could result in the price rising as it did last year.

“Forward buying now will result in reduced costs for the winter.”
